While visiting the beach with my family a few years ago, I
was struck by the awesome majesty of God’s glorious creation. I was vividly
reminded that the water’s edge is an intrinsically spiritual place. The water’s
edge for many people is all about suntans, seafood, surfing, and sandcastles.
There’s nothing wrong with those enjoyable waterfront activities but the water’s
edge is about so much more! It’s an incredible place to commune with God. I
felt impressed to write about the sights and sounds of the water’s edge to allow
people the opportunity to experience a closer connection with God. I worked on
the book on and off for almost three full years before its publication.

The book is designed to be enjoyed either at home or the
water’s edge. My recommendation is that if you’re headed to the water’s edge in
the next couple of weeks—be patient and wait until you arrive to begin enjoying
the book. However, if it’s going to be a month or more before you go, I’d
suggest using it as a one-week devotional guide for the next seven days and then
read it again when you get to the water’s edge! That way, you have the best of
both worlds.

The book is relatively brief, only 136 pages. Each chapter
can easily be read in less than 15 minutes. Some people have read the entire
book in two hours or less. Each chapter is complete in itself. You can enjoy
the book whenever you find your way to the water’s edge—even for just an hour or
two.

The book can be enjoyed in a variety of locations at the
water’s edge. You can enjoy the scriptural insights and life truths at the
lake, the river, the bay, the sound, or even on a cruise. The blessings that
you will derive from reading this book are not limited just to the seashore.
After all, the Sea of Galilee is a large lake. This book can be enjoyed any
place where the water meets the land.

Larry King still hasn’t called, and Oprah is ignoring me.
I don’t have a multi-million dollar advertising budget so “word of mouth” is the
best way to let others know about Breakfast on the Beach. If you’ve
enjoyed the book, tell your friends! If you know someone who’s headed to the
water’s edge—buy them a copy of the book as a vacation gift. If you’re staying
in a beach house or lake home, leave a copy as a gift to the property owners.
The people that frequent the property can then enjoy and be introduced to the
book. Thanks for spreading the word.

In the vocabulary of faith, Selah is a mysterious
word used only rarely by the writers of scripture; yet beneath the mystery,
there is rich meaning. Quite literally, the word Selah was used as a
musical or choir notation that signaled a pause in the music. It means to
“pause, reflect, and to consider what has come before.” It is like a spiritual
speed bump nudging us to slow down and take a break; pause long enough to ponder
the truths that have just been proclaimed. Selah may be the poet’s
perfect reflection of Psalm 46:10a, “Be still and know that I am God.” (NIV) I
use the word at the end of each chapter as a way of encouraging the reader to
pause and reflect on the truths of the chapter they have just read.

“Hab. 2:14” is a shorthand inscription for Habakkuk,
chapter 2, verse 14. Habakkuk is a book in the Old Testament--the 35th
out of 39 Old Testament books. The verse reads, “For the earth will be filled
with the knowledge of the glory of the Lord, as the waters cover the sea.” This
verse beautifully summarizes the core message of the book better than any other
verse I’ve seen.
Karen Morgan, a professional photographer based in
Richmond, Virginia took the picture in the Bahamas. The first time I saw the
picture, I wanted it to be on the cover. The panoramic photo beautifully
depicts the playful innocence of a child engulfed by the grandeur of God’s
glorious creation. Visit Karen’s website
www.kmorganphoto.com to enjoy more of her photos.
The pen and ink drawings were done by the

My wife “Pal” is a missionary kid who grew
up in Tanzania and Kenya, East Africa. She still speaks fluent
Swahili to this day. “Baraka” is Swahili for “blessings.”
